What is a mocktail?

Mocktails are essentially non-alcoholic cocktails. It is a mixture of juice, soda, or simple syrup that resembles the look and feel of a cocktail without the booze or hangover the next morning. They have really gotten popular over the last few years! They are a great way to enjoy a fun drink without dealing with a headache from the alcohol.

The trick to the best mocktails

The way to make a good mocktail is not just in the ingredients. It’s also in the glass you use and fancy garnishes! You want the mocktail to feel like a special and fancy beverage and not just like an adult version of a juice box. I love to use a large wine glass, fancy martini glass, copper mug or champagne flute. You can garnish your mocktails with fruit, a cinnamon stick, lemon or orange peel, or herbs such as mint leaves, fresh thyme, or rosemary giving the drink a beautiful pop of color.

I think another key to a good mocktail is using ingredients that give an interesting flavor. For this recipe, I used kombucha to give a slightly acidic flavor and a punch to your taste buds! (If you don’t like kombucha that’s okay! I give ideas to swap it out below!)

The star ingredient in this fall mocktail

This delicious drink uses a homemade Pumpkin Spice Syrup. The best part is it is only made with 4 ingredients and comes together in minutes! It is made with a natural sweetener and only adds 8 grams of sugar. It is full of fall flavors and warm spices and truly is as good as it sounds! I also use this syrup in my Pumpkin Spice Latte and Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte recipes.

Ingredients to make the Pumpkin Ginger Spice Spritz

Pumpkin Spice Syrup
  • Pumpkin Puree – this recipe uses real pumpkin puree. Just be sure to get the puree and not pumpkin pie filling. That is already sweetened! I used canned pumpkin but if you make your own pumpkin puree, that works too!
  • Maple Syrup – used as a natural sweetener.
  • Vanilla Extract – the hint of vanilla compliments the pumpkin spice flavors.
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice – this is a blend of fall spices used in pumpkin pie such as ground cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. If you do not have this you can substitute for ground cinnamon and nutmeg.

Ginger Kombucha

I think the kombucha adds a depth of flavor that you typically look for in a cocktail. It gives a little “punch” without any of the booze! if you aren’t a fan of kombucha, ginger ale or ginger beer would both be a great option to use instead. Just keep in mind that both of those options will be sweeter than kombucha. Another fun flavor to try would be an apple flavored kombucha, although that one is usually seasonal and a little harder to find at the grocery store.

Club soda

I love to use my soda stream to make soda water, but you can buy it from the store or use sparkling water.

Ice cubes

Since this is fizzy I think the drink is best over ice (rather than in a cocktail shaker or martini glass). I love these small ice cube trays to make cute little ice cubes.

Garnish

I like to use a cinnamon stick, but if you want you could use other garnishes such as apple slices, star anise, or sprig of rosemary.

How to make the Pumpkin Ginger Spice Spritz Mocktail recipe

Using your favorite fancy glass such as a large wine glass or even just a simple mason jar, fill with ice. Then add one tablespoon of the Pumpkin Spice Syrup and then fill the glass with 1/2 ginger kombucha and 1/2 soda water. Add a cinnamon stick for garnish and just like that you have a simple mocktail that is packed with flavor!

How to store the Pumpkin Spice Syrup

The Pumpkin Spice Syrup will make about 12 servings. I recommend keeping the syrup in the fridge for storage after you make your mocktail. It will stay good for 10-14 days. (If it will even last that long!!)
