Is bone broth just another trendy thing you see online, or is it actually a superfood that you should be drinking? A Holistic Nutritionist breaks it down for you.

I have to admit when I first heard about drinking bone broth, I was immediately turned off by it. Something about the word “bone” being in there freaked me out a bit. But it seemed to be something everyone was talking about, so I needed to know if it was worth the hype.

The short answer- yes! But let’s dig into the reasons why.

What is bone broth?

Bone broth is made from simmering animal bones and connective tissue. It typically is simmered for up to 24 hours to draw out all the nutrients from the bones. Usually, you will find chicken or beef bone broth, which can be used just like you would broth in soups, sauces, or any recipes that call for broth.

Bone broth may be a new concept to some people, but it has actually been around for centuries. Not only is bone broth a no-waste method of cooking, but it contains many nutrients and medicinal properties.

Why are people drinking bone broth?

If bone broth is essentially a type of broth for soups and recipes, why are people drinking it? Research has found an abundance of health properties in bone broth, so people will drink it to take in all the benefits. Some people choose to include it when they are sick, or some people will drink it daily. Let’s dig into why you should consider drinking bone broth too!

Benefits of bone broth

Bone broth is a powerhouse of nutrients and health benefits. It is an easy way to boost your nutrition and nourish your body with minerals. It also helps with inflammation, gut health, joint health, and immunity and is full of collagen.

Packed with nourishment

Bone broth is a great source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. It is packed with calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Not only is bone broth delicious to drink, but it also will give a nutrient boost to any dish you incorporate it in. Sub out regular broth in any recipe to utilize bone broth more often.

Reduces inflammation

The glycine that is in bone broth may help reduce inflammation in the body. Glycine is an amino acid found in the protein in bone broth and contributes to many of the other benefits of bone broth listed below. Bone broth is also a great source of gelatin, which may help reduce inflammation in the body.  The anti-inflammatory properties in bone broth may also contribute to why it is beneficial for your gut, joint, and immune health.

Good for your gut health

Bone broth may help with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and leaky gut. An amino acid called Glutamine helps with digestion and maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Bone broth can also help with gut issues such as constipation and diarrhea by reducing inflammation. It may even help you fight food sensitivities!

Good for joint health

Collagen is another hot topic in the wellness world, but for good reason! Collagen is found in bones and connective tissue, and when cooked to make bone broth, the collagen breaks down into gelatin. Gelatin is what makes bone broth solid and jiggly when cold (that’s one way to know you have a good bone broth!!) As we age, our joints naturally start to wear down, collagen and gelatin help protect joints from this damage.

Aids with sleep

The amino acids in bone broth, particularly glycine, can promote good sleep. One study found that glycine may help with falling asleep faster, having a deeper sleep, and waking up less throughout the night.

My favorite Bone Broth

Not all bone broth is the same and to get the many benefits from including it in your diet, you want to make sure to use good quality bone broth. Companies know that bone broth is a trendy word, and will add that to their packaging, even though it’s not high quality.

My favorite brand is Fond Bone Broth. Not only is it the best-tasting bone broth you can buy, but it is slow simmered for over 18 hours and they only use pasture-raised chicken and grass-fed beef bones. It is organic and they are verified regenerative. You can also get delicious flavors to sip on including lemon and garlic, and shiitake and sage
